12.1 Orphans of noble parentage are the only characters who are titled when they arrive in London. There are certain occasions that merit a title attempt (listed below). Anyone below the minimum SL required (shown on the tables) does not qualify for the attempt and only one title may be attempted for in any one season. If more than one occasion for a title attempt occurs in a season each will be tried until a title is received or all attempts are resolved. However, only one level of nobility may be gained each season.
12.11 Occasions or title attempts:
There is a 1 in 6 chance of the King granting a title. This may not be influenced but is affected by a +1 modifier for every 3 SL the candidate is above the minimum SL required for the title being attempted. A character may make multiple title attempts in one month if he qualifies but only one title a month may be gained. Failed past attempts have no affect on present attempts. (Even failed attempts in the same month no longer give any modifier). If the King does not see fit to grant a title for this occasion, it is possible for the granting of a knighthood, see section 12.12.
Once titled a character's SL is increased to the "New SL" listed on the table if his SL is currently lower. The number of SP listed is the number the character receives the next month or the next month in London if he is away. The character starts to receive the monthly pension listed (For Baron and above) and receives estates in the area determined by the King (GM). Those serving a sentence at the Frontier or in gaol are not considered for title attempts.
12.12 Orders of Knighthood:
If the King has not seen fit to grant a title to a character (i.e. a failed title attempt or due to insufficient SL), the character again receives a 1 in 6 chance of receiving a knighthood. This may not be influenced but is affected by a +1 modifier for every 3 SL the candidate is above the SL of 6. There are three Orders of Knighthood in London Engarde. These are ‘the Order of the White Horse’ which represents those who have served the Crown in Governmental and Financial services (i.e. Governors, Ministers and financial investors), ‘the Order of St. George’ which represents those who have served the Crown in military service and ‘the Order of the Golden Sun’ which represents those who serve in the fields of Science and Learning (i.e. members of the Royal Society).
If the character has already received a knighthood in the Order, then he is granted a promotion to the next level within the order (see the table below), up to Grand Master of the Order. Although there may only be one Grand Master of each order at any given time. The current Grand-Master may retire his rank at any time, but upon doing so returns to the rank of Knight and is not eligible for promotion within the order.

Also, once a member has been inducted into a knightly order, he has access to the chapter houses of his order. He may elect to hold a party there, once per season, and there is a 1 in 6 chance that a member of the Royal family will attend with the benefit of toadying for all guests.
Estates
12.21 On receiving a title the character gains an Estate that provides a retreat in the country and monthly income from the peasantry. If the character already has an estate from a previous title the new estate supercedes the old one. Each estate comes with a house or larger residence and has a revenue that is variable. The size of the residence is determined by the title. Residences from estates cannot be sold. Nobles do not have to pay upkeep for their estates.
