5.0 Status Points and Social Level

5.1 A character's Social Level (SL) affects just about every aspect of his life. SL can be increased by accumulating Status Points (SP) during a month.

5.11 Status points are accumulated in various ways. Everything from club membership to weekly actions can earn or lose the character SP.

5.12 A player must accumulate a number of SP equal to his SL each month to maintain his current SL.

5.2 A certain amount of SP can be carried over to the next month. Any excess/deficit over/under 2*SL is retained. However, when at the front, on an expedition, or on a mission, no changes are made to a character's SP tally and he resumes with the previous total carried forward on his return to London. SPs for certain events such as duels that take place before departing for the front will be held over

5.3 4*SL status points are required to raise a SL. The cost of doing so is 3*SL, after which the excess or deficit over/under 2*SL is carried forward.

5.4 If a character has less SP than his SL at the end of the month, he loses one SL but is refunded 2*the new SL in SPs or the entire amount of SPs (Whichever is smaller),

5.5 A maximum of one SL may be gained or lost in one month in ordinary circumstances. Certain situations which impose an automatic gain or loss are additional and have no effect on the SP total.

5.6 For example: The following table illustrates what happens for a character of SL 8.

SP at the end of the Month

Change in SL

SP Carried Forward

6

Drops to 7

18

Stays at 8

34

Raises to 9

-6

5.7 Note that all calculations are done at the current SL of the character. The new SL is considered to take affect between the end of one month and the beginning of the next.

5.8 While these calculations may seem to be complex the idea is to make all SP gains and losses count for something and thus encourage better role playing. Note that it is easier to drop in SL in this system than in the original En Garde system if you do not aggressively pursue SPs.
